Neither will the New World trope of bumbling blue-black doctor.” Though there are two doctors in this story, she situates the characters within the context of the American privilege of movement, up and down through class boundaries, across oceans, by Amtrak trains and tro-tro. My not-singing skills grew by leaps and bounds thanks simply to the fact that entropy takes its cut. Musicians are a bit like sharks. If they do not keep swimming, going through the specific physical motions of their music-making, their skills wither and die. I could feel muscle memory getting fuzzy, my instincts growing less reflexive. When it saddened me, as it inevitably did, I told myself I wasn’t a singer any more, and it could not possibly matter.”

- Hanne Blank’s Deep Throat #4: On Being and Unbeing a Singer

From Liam Golden’s marvelous Spotlight: Boco Watches the...

From Liam Golden’s marvelous Spotlight: Boco Watches the Sea

"The Drew’s community of River Heights is in many ways a typical Midwestern town, yet it presents..."

“
The Drew’s community of River Heights is in many ways a typical Midwestern town, yet it presents serious challenges to risk mitigation due to the unprecedented number of carnivals, cults, traveling circuses, organized crime syndicates, and counterfeiting rings in its vicinity….

Yes, but this is Reagan Country. It’s not political, not a GOP slogan. Nothing to do with tax reform, Grenada, supply-side economics. It’s a beckoning, a greeting—a suspension of reality. A 0.4-square-mile fantasy, or a national subconscious. There is a space that lies beyond Americana, that exists outside—apart from—the borderlines of memory and narrative and withered material artifact, where history tangles toward mythmaking until their threads seamlessly intertwine.”

-
Beyond Americana by Zach Schonfeld

"Speedboat somehow does without plot all the stuff that is usually plot’s responsibility… Literature,..."

“Speedboat somehow does without plot all the stuff that is usually plot’s responsibility… Literature, to get cute about it, isn’t about the story; it’s about the telling – the whole point of the fictive exercise is to impart feeling, not knowledge, or, because that really is too cute a sum-up, to effect some sort of emotional/spiritual response in the reader. It’s true that we’re hardwired in some infinitely mysterious way to tell, listen, and relate to stories, but at their core, stories are vehicles to smuggle the more real but less tangible stuff in – suspense, heartbreak, triumph, sympathy, beauty, sublimity, defeat, ennui, whatever it is that gets you off… All I’m saying is that literature isn’t as much about the story as it is about creating the space where the story happens. And Speedboat has, in the fullest, most praiseworthy sense, created a space, one dictated and propelled by an emotional, not a narrative, engine.”

-
Menachem Kaiser reviews Speedboat and Pitch Dark by Renata Adler

When I first started playing around with my voice, I had a guitar pedal that would loop. But you could only loop one thing. With the thing I use now, the RC-50, you can have three different ones going at the same time—a lot more dynamic. I just started making sounds. Instead of saying something on the spot, I would just sing, kind of like I’ve always done. I’ve done it my whole life. My mom does it too, humming, singing. …My first album is pretty much all those loops I made when I first started playing around with it. It’s completely wordless. I just liked the way it felt.

Hi tumblr pals,

Excited to share with all of you that independent publishing house Paper Farms just released a full-color booklet featuring two of my previous comic zine titles “Intergalactic Telepathic Pen Pal” and “A Special Message For You Hand-Delivered To You From the Universe” in a single volume that also includes a process essay by yours truly. Since me = cheap with my printing costs, I’m tickled pink to finally have a properly bound book to share with all of you that isn’t completely monochromatic.

*** ORDER ORDER ORDER HERE :)

—

She is also the author of The Rumpus’s awesome, haunting, spooky, beautiful, mournful Saturday Comics.

"(Which, don’t even get me started, half the fun of listening to music and possibly more than half is..."

“(Which, don’t even get me started, half the fun of listening to music and possibly more than half is context, this is a very nearly religious conviction for me, all hail context forever, I know this battle is already lost however I will be waging it til my dying breath, “context!” I will cry from my deathbed, “context!” I will say to those whom I haunt later on, “I got haunted and the best my ghost can come up to scare me with is ‘context’” my hauntees will complain, everyone’s a critic, however not everyone is a ghost, yet.)”

-
I would buy a 1000-page book of John Darnielle’s parentheticals (via rachelfershleiser)
